#3 Winner, Winner, Soy Chicken Dinner!
I’ve won several awards in my lifetime. As a matter of fact, I won “Most Beautiful Baby” the day I was born. Over the years I’ve collected “Successfully Completed Multiplication Tables”, “Physical Fitness Honor Roll”, “Honor Graduate” from just about every course I’ve taken, “1st Place” in a 5k, and the awards just continue to get better. But I was waiting to check this Thing off my list until I won an award that was really special to me. Finally, here’s the story:
I was happily staring off into space at work when one of my co-workers yelled, “PETA is looking for the military’s sexiest vegetarian!” According to the article in The Air Force Times, I only had 24 hours left to submit my entry so I immediately left work to search for pictures to submit. My co-workers are very familiar with my vegetarian ways - healthy food, aversion to hunting, poly-vinyl purses, and man-made shoes. Over the next few days, people I had never met were walking up to me telling me that I would win. No pressure, right?
On December 3rd, I got an email stating that I was a finalist and PETA needed more information. I wrote 6 pages, essentially BEGGING them to pick me for this honor. The wait was excruciating!
I got the fateful email on December 8th - I was a winner! PETA had so many entrants, so they decided to pick winners from all branches. I walked away with the “Sexiest Vegetarian in the Air Force” title. The news was announced to the public yesterday, and press releases went out to the Associated Press this morning. I’m not sure if I’ve made the front page of a national newspaper yet (see Thing 63), but I’ve made it into several papers.
