This all started when I was driving from my home in Florida to visit a friend in Texas.  I passed a huge outlet mall and remembered that I needed to pick up a birthday present for my friend.  Three hours and three iced coffees later, I stood in Books-A-Million jitterring over 101 Things To Do Before You Die.  This book was the key to freeing my dear friend from the “metrocity” he had succumbed to as a college student at prissy Trinity University.  He had way too many crisply ironed khaki shorts, political jokes that would slap a straight face on a hyena, and a suspiciously fake interest in wine.  Just once I wanted him to throw caution to the wind and experience more that life has to offer.  Happy Birthday!

I kept thinking about that strange little book for a year after I had given it to my friend.  Sure, I had tried out for American Idol and the Spurs Silver Dancers, but maybe there were even more meaningless Things in life that I was missing out on.  I called my friend who admitted to filing the book neatly in his collection and never looking at it again.  Are you kidding?  This was the key to living!  He claimed he was too chicken to get arrested and too single to encounter a threesome (two of the things the book suggests), so the book did him no good.  A few days later the book was in my hands, and I was begging, then finally threatening my husband to go through it with me.  He agreed!

So now we’re on a journey to accomplish some seriously crazy Things and enjoying every minute of life.  As for my friend’s next birthday, I can’t decide whether to get him a pair of khakis or a threesome (kidding).

  1. Haha! Nice story!! I found out about the book when my friend got it as a gift from another friend. I never really did anything crazy or unordinary, so I decided I had to get this book for myself. Now I’ve bungyjumped, auditioned for the Swedish Idol and won a guitar signed by Jason Mraz - all thanks to these books! :D
